Screw Your National Show. I'm Still Posting Cards From My Local Show

Go vote in Group 2, kids. Do it.
--------------------------------------
First up are these Looney Tunes cards I should've posted the other day in the oddball post.
Upper Deck Comic Ball. Two Griffey Seniors (with Jim Abbot and some other guy) and a Dave Martinez. Sure.

Speaking of that other guy, found a bunch of set needs featuring The Kid and a few inserts. For those two Leaf cards, one has 'Passing Through Time' written on it. The back of the card is a reprint of his '93 Leaf card. Not a parallel. Each are part of the base set. Interesting filler stuff, right there.

Two more. The UD Play Ball is a 1941 style parallel. There are more faces on the back of the checklist, but I forget who they are.

Ok, you eagle-eyed readers can surely spot the Griffey on these cards. I'm going to need a ruling. Are these actual Griffeys that count toward the collection, or no? I wagered 40 total cents on these that the answer will be 'yes'. On another not, boy that's a lot of steroids to share a card with.

Handful of Larkins to add to collection. I've now crossed the 700 mark. Sweet. That Pacific is a blue parallel that doesn't quite read on the scan. Hey look, More Griffey.

A pile of fresh Dunns. Mmmmm. The Topps Gallery is a thick and shiny Artist Proof parallel. And my goodness. More Griffey cameos. The man is everywhere.

Still more Donkeys. Good stuff.

Hope all you wealthy bastards are whoopin it up at the National. Go Reds.

Some More Card Show Things! Things From a Card Show! Look at the Things!

First, of course, is to go vote in Group 2 of the NTNBRVT. I've already got a superb idea for my next tourney, though we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. My tournament cockles are rejuvenated.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe I'm overselling this post with the exclamation-riddled title, but I don't care. Roll em out.

A pile of inserts I didn't have. Nice. For the curious:

1995 Pinnacle Upstarts Willie Greene
1997 Metal Mining for Gold Curt Lyons
1995 Topps League Leaders Kevin Mitchell
2000 UD Black Diamond Diamonation Sean Casey (Is that supposed to be a play on 'Diamond Nation' or 'Domination'? Maybe both.
1994 Score Rookie/Traded Changing Places Deion Sanders
1997 Donruss Rated Rookies Steve Gibralter
2010 Topps Opening Day Mascots Gapper (I hate the Gapper so much. So much.)
2010 Upper Deck Portraits Brandon Phillips

What's that? More inserts? The sideways kind?

1996 Leaf All Star Game MVP contenders Reggie Sanders
2002 Fleer Tradition Lumber Company Sean Casey
2005 Fleer Ultra RBI Kings Sean Casey

2010 Bowman Draft Chris Heisey signed (?). Now, I'm aware this may not be a legit signature from Mr. Heisey. I'm also aware that even if it is, it's very quickly washing away. BUT. It was in a nickel box. I am willing to bet five cents on this card. Mainly because I didn't have a Heisey IP.

One dime box dude had a ton of Ultra Gold Medallions from various years. He clearly busted a ton of the stuff. How's that ROI working, buddy?

Hey, even more Ultra Gold. And some Fleer Tiffany. And a UD Minors Future Stock parallel. And a Pacific Gold. And a Pacific Blue. And a Bowman Gold. These poor babies have been jumping from box to box and show to show for way too long, I'm sure. They are home now.

Bazooka Mini, Topps Mini, Topps 206 Mini. 10 cents, 10 cents, 10 cents.

A few 'tough' chromies. I never see '97 Chromes. And what's the deal with the print run on 2002 Topps Traded? I'm still missing a ton.

2003 Topps Gallery Artist's Proofs Austin Kearns/Sean Casey. These are extra shiny and wicked thick. Never seen these before. Dude had about 100 of em, but only two Redlegs.

Tons more show stuff to roll out over the next few days. Go Reds.

Non-Topps Non-Bowman Reds Vintage Tournament - Group 2

Group 1 wraps up with 1952 Red Man and 1960 Kahn's on top, followed closely by 1954 Exhibits and 1972 Kellogg's. Again, we're just determining seeding for now, so all cards will be seen again.

Here's a refresher on the rules:

1) No Topps. No Bowman. I realize a lot of these were probably produced by Topps in some capacity and I just don't realize it. Such is life.
2) One card per set per year may enter. Card must be of a Red (duh).
3) There will be 6 seeding rounds, each with 9 random cards. You vote for your favorite 5. These results will be used to seed the cards into a bracket.
4) All cards will be seeded into a double-elimination bracket.
5) We will all revel in our stupid little hobby and wonder why someone would do heroin when he could collect cards instead.

Group 2 can be voted on in the sidebar. I'll close the voting in 4 days instead of 5 this time. So voting will close Sunday at noon. Vote for your favorite 5 in the sidebar.

Oddball Show Shenanigans

Here's a big ol' handful of nonsense from this past weekend's card show.

2001 Grandstand Dayton Dragons team issue. It's apparently a 30 card release, of which I dug 27 out of some nickel boxes. A few major leaguers in the set: Stephen Smitherman (1 season, 21 games), Ryan Snare (1 game), Josh Hall (1 season, 6 games), Dustin Moseley (7 seasons, 101 games), Randy Ruiz (3 seasons, 68 games), Donnie Scott (4 seasons, 173 games). I'm missing Wily Mo Pena, certainly the biggest name in the set.

These are from the 1993 Kahn's set. I thought I had all of em, but thumbing through the box, I realized I had never seen that particular Schottzie/Marge Schott card. So I panicked and bought all 20 from the set he had (again, for a nickel apiece). Turns out, I was missing 4. No longer. Sweet.

1991 Collect-A-Books Jose Rijo
1988 Broder Chris Sabo
1989 Star Joe Turek
19?? Broder Chris Sabo
1987 Kraft Home Plate Heroes Eric Davis
1989 Panini Stickers Bo Diaz

1993 Stadium Club Toys R Us Tim Costo
1993 Stadium Club Toys R Us Willie Grene
1987 Toys R Us Kal Daniels
2000 Starting Lineup Scott Williamson
2000 MLB Showdown 1st Edition Brett Tomko
2002 MLB Showdown Sean Casey
2008 Playoff Contenders Brandon Waring
1996 Topps Bazooka Ron Gant
1992 Topps Magazine Reggie Sanders.

High quality silliness.

A handful of playing cards from various years. Some are from MLB sets, some are from Reds-only sets. All will be gladly placed in my oddities binder.

2015 Allen & Ginter Box Topper Joey Votto. Two bucks. These used to be more expensive, but now that there've been ten years worth of em, the market is diluted I suppose. Fine by me.

Go Reds.

Vaya con Dios, Johnny Beisbol

Here's hoping you get to experience a playoff win this year.

Also, here's hoping no one wants his Reds cards anymore, and they all fall into my lap.

Go Reds.

Some Reds-Not-Reds Show Loot

I'm very happy about my Reds-not-Reds project (one card each of as many Reds as possible featured on a different team). With the vintage haul from yesterday and the JustCommons order, we're starting to take shape. Here's a smattering of em, including my favorite Red-not-Red.

Dante Bichette is a nice surprise. Played 125 games in 2000 before moving to the Red Sox.

Sean Casey in another jersey upsets me.

Leo Durocher. Hall of Fame manager. Three years and change playing for the Reds.

I haven't seen a single Harvey Haddix card that isn't interesting.

Here's my favorite Red-not-Red. Christy Mathewson. Here are his lifetime stats, broken down by team:

New York Giants: 373-188 record. 636 games and 552 starts from 1900-1916. 2504 strikeouts in 4779.2 innings.

Cincinnati Reds: 1-0 record. 1 game, played in 1916. 3 strikeouts in 9 innings pitched, giving up 8 runs.

He was a player/manager for the Reds, by the way.

I've got tons upon tons of show stuff I'll be sprinkling over the next few days. Go Reds.

Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy

First up, be sure to vote in my latest stupid tournament. Description and first block of cards here.
----------------------------------------
Now, why am I so excited? I just got back from my first card show in a long, long time. And boy howdy were the dime boxes overflowing.

Yeesh. Definitely going to be neglecting the missus tonight. Too busy sorting and cataloging, babe. The stack on the left is about 400 cards strong. Some NICKEL boxes that couldv'e been dime boxes and some dime boxes that could've been quarter boxes populated the pile. Next to it is about 150 Bengals for my freshly started one-of-every-Bengal project. Next to that is 71 for my Reds-not-Reds project, all from 1957-1972, all for a quarter each. Noice. And as a bonus, I come home to a JustCommons package in the mail with 151 Reds-not-Reds cards (the pile on the right). The only thing more than a quarter was that sweet Votto box topper for two bucks. Geez. Gonna be a good night, kids.

Go Reds.

The Non-Topps Non-Bowman Reds Vintage Tournament Kicks Off

It's been a long while since I've done a needlessly complicated tournament. I did a Ridiculous Tournament that was 512 cards strong and an Ugly Tournament that was 128 cards of unbridled terror. I think those were the numbers. I've blocked it all out. Too much stimulus.

For this one, I'm focusing on finding the best vintage cards from my collection that were not put out by the Topps/Bowman machine. I realize Bowman wasn't under the Topps umbrella back in the day, but they were still number two, even though they only put out 8 years of cards.

I checked my inventory and I have 54 different sets represented. I took one good card from each set (for most, I only had one) and you and I will put em through hell. Here be the rules:

NTNBRVT Rules:

1) No Topps. No Bowman. I realize a lot of these were probably produced by Topps in some capacity and I just don't realize it. Such is life.
2) One card per set per year may enter. Card must be of a Red (duh).
3) There will be 6 seeding rounds, each with 9 random cards. You vote for your favorite 5. These results will be used to seed the cards into a bracket.
4) All cards will be seeded into a double-elimination bracket.
5) We will all revel in our stupid little hobby and wonder why someone would do heroin when he could collect cards instead.

Let's ride.
--------------------------------------------------------
