1919-21 W514 Strip Cards

These things are hideous. They are flimsy, badly cut, chewed-up, and ragged. The art is preposterous, the printing is low effort, and they are way too small.

I love them.

Walter "Dutch" Reuther. 137 big league wins over 11 seasons, including a World Series win for the Reds' in 1919. Nothing else notable happened in that series.

Ivey "Ira" Wingo. 13 of his 17 seasons were with Cincy. Started 3 of the 1919 World Series games at catcher. Retired with the most games caught in the National League with over 1,200. He's still in the top 25.

"Gentleman" Jake Daubert was the NL MVP with the Dodgers in 1913. Led the league in batting twice, several fielding metrics several times, was a de facto All-Star 7 times, started all games in the 1919 World Series, his first year with the Reds, and is in both the Dodgers and Reds Halls of Fame. He also holds the distinction as the oldest active player to die midseason, passing away at age 40 in 1924.

fff
Jimmy Ring spent 3 inauspicious seasons with the Reds, of his 12 seasons, but out-dueled Ed Cicotte to get the W in Game 4 of the 1919 Series.

Harry "Slim" Sallee only spent 1.5 of his 14 seasons with the Reds, but the full one included 21 wins in 1919 and a World Series pitching win. Also holds an interesting distinction as one of only three pitchers to have more wins than walks in a season, walking 16 that year. Christy Mathewson and Bret Saberhagen are the others.

One final thought,

THESE DUDES WOULD'VE BEATEN THOSE CHEATIN' SOX WITH OR WITHOUT THE GAMBLERS. JUST SAYIN'.

Go Redlegs.
