A Non-Reds Project (GASP) and a Diamond King Contest Win

A bit ago, the ever-so-generous Diamond King ran a contest, giving away all sorts of goodies. Among them, was an excellent pile of vintage Hall of Famers, which the gods of randomness decided belonged in my home. So what you should do right now is head over to his site, give him some clicks, read his stuff, then come on back to check out my spoils.

Boom. What a nice lot. 1974 Topps Brooks Robinson, Gaylord Perry, Rollie Fingers, and Carl Yastrzemski, a 1965 Topps Embossed MICKEY FRIGGIN MANTLE, a 1973 Topps Don Sutton, a 1966 Topps Leaders Frank Robinson/Tony Oliva/Al Kaline, a 1979 Topps Willie McCovey, and a 1971 Topps Leaders Tom Seaver/Wayne Simpson/Luke Walker (which nicely justifies this post, as we still get a Red). That Mantle is most excellent and is my third Mick from his playing days (with a '62 and '64 Topps).

This contest win has inspired me to go through with a project I have been mulling for a while. It's a Non-Reds based project, my first. I've started a Hall of Fame binder, where my goal is to acquire a card of every Hall of Famer. All 306 of em. Ideally, this card will be from the athlete's playing days, but this is only practical for 1960's and later, and only really going to happen for 1970's and later. I will never own a real Babe Ruth. Nor will I ever pursue a real Sandy Koufax. So this is not a rule, merely a preference.

I made a tab up top to document the project. I went on a JustCommons binge to grab a whole bunch of cheapo modern cards of most electees, over 150 in fact. Combined with the junk wax I have lying around, I'm over 200. I suspect finding a lot of the Negro League players will prove the most annoying. But the project is in its infancy, so I'm not fretting just yet.

If you're feeling generous, shoot me a message. I really only require the player be in the uniform for which he's most known.

So thanks, Diamond King, both for the cards and for an excuse for me to waste more money. Go Reds.

  1. You should be able to get a Kofax League Leader card from his playing days for a pretty good price.

You should also be able to find the Negro League players you need in the last few years Ginter/Goodwin/Obak or in the early 90s Ted Williams sets.

    1. The only issue I have with the Leader cards is I'd prefer no one else on the card.

And yeah, most of what i picked up already are ginter/panini golden age/panini cooperstown/goodwin/obak/ted williams/conlon. I can't imagine there's any hall of famer that has fallen through the cracks for all of those.

  2. This was one of the Diamond King lots I really wanted to win. Congrats! That Mantle is amazing.

I was going to suggest looking into the Conlon brand for your HOFer project. Not only does it have cheaper cards of biggies like Ruth and Gehrig, but it also features ones of lesser known HOFers like Roger Bresnahan.

    2. No worries just keep me in mind when you get some. Which Doerr would you like. I like the idea of the HOF binders. I've sent a few of to the lost collector. He has a similar thing going on.

    6. Oh, plenty. As a Red. However, he went in the HoF as an Oriole, so i must respect that. As an Oriole I only have the one from this post where there are other people on the card.
