Completely Red: 1988 Score

With Topps, Donruss, and Fleer producing cards by the literal millions, Pinnacle decided to join the fun in 1988 with their Score brand. In-your-face color (on the front AND back) would define this set. It's kind of garishly hideous, honestly. I like how, in order to force some symmetry with the 'Score' logo, someone decided just to throw some stars on the card, because, why not? The full color backs which included a color head shot and a nice bio would help push the Big Three to eventually do the same (though it would take a few years). A huge positive is that every regular card is an action shot. Plus, they were nice and cheap.

Including the Traded set, we have 33 Reds, including a solid 16 All Stars, an Eric Davis/Tim Raines duo for no real reason other than they were both similarly good, and a Tom Hume in a Phillies jersey (though a Reds logo on the back, so it counts). In addition, they spelled Terry Francona 'Terry Franconia' in early editions, so that's included as a bonus at the end.

  1. 1988 Score is one of my favorite sets of the Eighties. One man's "garishly hideous" is another man's "Hey, have you SEEN 1988 Donruss and 1988 Fleer?"

It's funny, I had hardly noticed the three stars when I was collecting the cards... that eventually changed to 'What's up with the stars?", which ultimately ended up as "Couldn't they have put the team or the year there instead of the stars????"

  2. I never noticed the stars either!

Great to see all those Reds from 1988 in one place. Even if one is Tom Hume with an asterisk!
