Why am I wishing Mr. Garvey a happy birthday? He's not a Red, nor does he have any ties to the Reds. BUT, I'm a shameless shill and easily bribed. So when the blog Garvey Cey Russell Lopes is offering a contest giving away some Reds goodness, yeah, I'll bite.
LUCKILY, this card exists:
1986 Fleer #640 NL West Sluggers featuring Dale Murphy, Steve Garvey, and Dave Parker. One of two known cards with Garvey and a Red (the other being an un-scannable Sportflics with Pete Rose).
So Happy 65th, Stevie. And happy blogging, GRCL.
And Go Reds.
Nice choice. I forgot about that card.
ReplyDeleteIf you had asked me in 1986 which of those players would be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, I would have immediately answered, "All of them!" I still think Murphy should be in, and would be happy if Parker was in too.
Hey, throw 'em all in. I'm a big proponent of putting in anyone who is loved. And all three of these guys are loved. It's the Hall of Fame, not Hall of Stats.
DeleteI agree with jt - I thought they were all hofers. Love the metrodome backdrop on that card. And, garvey also lurks behind Pete rose on the 94 ud American epic card marking hit 4192.
ReplyDeleteah, nice cameo spot.
