One and Done: 1993

This is the third part of my new running theme, unimaginatively dubbed 'One and Done'. Here, I focus on cards of Reds players who, whether it be their only year in the bigs or their only year with the club, found themselves on the Cincinnati roster for only one season, yet long enough to sneak onto a card donning the Cincinnati red. That was a very convoluted sentence that I am choosing not to edit.

Today, we're looking at 1993. The '93 season saw a whopping 18 players make their first and only Reds appearance. Of these 18, I have a card of 11 of them in my collection. This was the first year of 11-year-tenured Jim Bowden's reign as GM, so perhaps this can be attributed to a major restructuring.

Jeff Reardon. 16 year career with 7 teams. 4x All Star. Former all-time saves leader.
With the Reds: 1993, 61.2 IP in 58 relief appearances. 4.09 ERA, 35 K's, 8 saves, 4-6 record.

Kevin Wickander. 6 year career with 4 teams.
With the Reds: 1993, 25.1 IP in 33 relief appearances. 20 K's, 6.75 ERA, 1-0 record.

Ross Powell. 3 year career with 3 teams.
With the Reds: 1993, 16.1 IP in 8 relief appearances and 1 start. 17 K's, 4.41 ERA, 0-3 record.

Juan Samuel. 16 year career with 7 teams. 3x All Star. 3x league leader in ABs. 2x league leader in triples.
With the Reds: 1993, 289 PA in 103 games. 4 HRs, 4 triples, 26 RBI, 9 SB, .230.

Brian Koelling. 1 year career with 1 team.
With the Reds: 1993, 16 PA in 7 games. 1 hit, 2 runs, .067.

Gary Varsho. 8 year career with 4 teams.
With the Reds: 1993, 109 PA in 77 games. 2 HRs, 11 RBI, .232.

Keith Gordon. 1 year career with 1 team.
With the Reds: 1993, 6 PA in 3 games. 1 hit, .167.

Greg Cadaret. 10 year career with 8 teams.
With the Reds: 32.2 IP in 34 relief apperances. 23 K's, 1 save, 1-0 record.

Jack Daugherty. 6 year career with 4 teams.
With the Reds: 1993, 71 PA in 46 games. 2 HR, 9 RBI, .220.

Keith Kessinger. 1 year career with 1 team.
With the Reds: 1993, 32 PA in 11 games. 1 HR, 3 RBI, .259.

Randy Milligan. 8 year career with 6 teams.
With the Reds: 1993, 282 PA in 83 games. 6 HR, 29 RBI, .274.

Go Reds.

  1. FYI, Keith Kessinger is the son of longtime Cubs player Don Kessinger.

Self-serving FYI: I've done something to piss off the Blogroll Gods, so I stopped appearing in them last week, but I thought you might want to see today's post, which features a custom of the newest Cincinnati Red, Brayan Pena
