2013 Topps Archives

Just nabbed the Reds base cards for Topps' latest Archives series. Looks like they went with reboots of 1972, 1982 (the hockey stick), 1985, and the hideous, yet nostalgia-inducing 1990. I guess they didn't make an effort to spread team sets nicely among the four years, as the distribution for my Reds was 0, 7, 1, 4, respectively. Phooey and pshaw. Let's see em...

Well what would Topps be without some repeat photos, eh? Morgan, Chapman, Cingrani, Perez, Votto, and Arroyo have photos I recognize. I wouldn't be surprised if the Phillips and Frazier are retreads as well. The Ray Knight 1979 design is from the short print series, pulled from the one pack I bought just for grins. Lucky. I still need the short prints of Hal Morris and Eric Davis. I'm kind of disappointed with this bunch. The last four, however, boosted my mood...

These 1990 designs hit me right in the childhood. I started collecting in 1991, so there were still a lot of 1990 cards to be had at your Big Lots, your Hills, and your Biggs retail stores. I only recognize the Bailey photo, but given the pattern, I'll guess the other photos are somewhere in my albums.

Well there you go. I give these a rating of 'meh'. Maybe I'll pick up the inserts someday and they'll redeem the set. Or maybe not. Go Reds.

  1. "Meh" pretty much sums up my feelings towards this set. It's odd that Topps put so many Reds in the '82 design, but not many in the others.

By the way, I just saw your comment on your last post, but can't seem to find your email. So, if you'd like, email me at nickpecucci AT sbcglobal DOT com. I'd love to pull some Reds cards for you.

    1. Email sent. And yeah, i was hoping for some 72's, but i suppose the 72 minis from last year will have to do. Definitely wanted more than 1 from 1985.

  2. TWELVE Reds in the base set?!?! Man, the Padres only have two! Ok, ok, I need to stop whining, they got completely shut out last year. I like the Perez card, though, but not a fan of most of the set designs they chose.

    1. Yeah i guess i shouldnt complain. My Reds were underrepresented a decade and a half ago, but they're getting some good rep now.
