Columbus, Ohio Vet Show - Part 1 of 4 - Vintage and 2013's

Oh sweet, sweet piles of new cards. Anything better? Well, sure. But in our little world, the joy of a fresh stack of cards is paramount. I've decided to break my huge show haul into four parts: Vintage/2013's, Griffeys, Larkins, and Everything Else. Let's get goin'...

1971 Topps Pete Rose. Hard to start a post in a better way than vintage Petey. This was a glaring hole in my '71 set. No longer. The '71's are so hard to keep looking good, owing to the black design. This card is no exception. But that just means that I can snag one. So I'm okay with it. The Hit King always looks regal in his card poses. He was operating at 100% all the time, even between games. That's why he's the best. Alright, too much rambling. More goodness...

A trio of 1957 Topps needs: Joe Nuxhall, Ed Bailey, Roy McMillan. All three made All Star appearances with the Redlegs. The '57 set is a classic. It's always nice to add one to the collection. The Bailey is particularly sweet. And Nuxhall, of course, is performing the "Topps Pitcher Pose" to perfection. Next up...

The 2013 Panini Prizm base set. They're officially the 2012 Panini Prizm set, but come on. They came out in April. Making the cut from the current roster are Chapman, Votto, Cueto, Bruce, Choo, and Phillips. Cameos by Bench and Rose. Good looking set. Not seeing the Reds logo on the helmet is always a bit odd, but it looks like they made a modest effort to keep photos focused on profiles. Good job, Panini. More...

2013 Gypsy Queen White Frame - Ryan Ludwick. Lookin' solid. The Gypsy border parallels have always been a favorite. I will definitely be hunting for more of them. Keep on truckin'...

2013 Topps The Greats - Joe Morgan. A nice companion to the Bench from the series I already have. These are on very thick stock. Gives the card an authority. Excellent. Next...

A slurry of vintage needs. 1955 and 1956 Topps Art Fowler (yes, kiddies, Topps was even recycling photos back in the '50s), 1965 Topps High Number Chico Ruiz, 1963 Topps Bob Purkey (Topps Pitcher Pose). More, more, more...

Six brand new 2013 Topps Blue Borders. While the larger borders this year detract from the photos, the parallels sure do stand out nicely. Added to the binder are Johnny Cueto, Todd Frazier, Logan Ondrusek, Didi Gregorius, Mat Latos, and Johnny Cueto League Leaders. Sweet. Soldiering on...

2013 Triple Play team set. I know these are officially meant for the few kids collecting nowadays, but us "grown-ups" seem to snag them with greater fervor than they do. I like this year's better than last's. And that Choo portrait seems to work really well with the theme. Don't know about that Bruce, though. Go, go, go...

1955 Bowman Johnny Klippstein (Bowman Pitcher Pose c/o Topps Pitcher Pose) and Rocky Bridges. Good adds to the near-complete '55 Bowman set. The Bridges is all busted up, which is perfect. More? Yup...

1976 Kellogg's Pete Rose and Joe Morgan. The 3D "coating" is completely missing from the Rose and has a few city miles on it for the Morgan. No biggie. Still making it into the binders. I like how they overlaid the signatures in tune to the photo (along the right arm for Rose and along the bat for Joe). I'll have to go look at my other '70s Kellogg's cards now to see if this was a theme I didn't notice. Almost done...

Some 2013 Topps Tribute base cards: Johnny Bench, Frank Robinson, Aroldis Chapman, and Johnny Cueto. This is supposed to be a high-end set from Topps, yet I see three recycled photos and they are not cut the same size. Tsk, tsk, Topps. You're better than that.

Now, the flagship of my day...

Boom. A 1968 Topps Pete Rose. What a nice looking card. A fairly young Pete here who had already established himself as a force in the league. This is the oldest Petey I own. It's so hard to find good Roses since everyone loves him. Many of the dealers at the show even said they hold on to them for their own collections. But this nice one fell into Red Cardboard's lap, and now graces the display shelf.

Whew. Already a successful show and I have three more planned posts. Man I love the Vet Show. See you Reds fans tomorrow. Go Reds.

  2. Indeed. They were so beat up, they were left to rot in a 50 cent box. I had to rescue them.
